BS 7671: The Electrician's Bible
In the UK, all electrical installations must follow BS 7671 (The IET Wiring Regulations). For years, plug-in solar existed in a "grey area." However, 2026 updates have formalized how these systems should be used.
The "DC Injection" Risk
The biggest technical safety risk is DC injection. If a solar inverter fails, it could leak DC current into your AC circuit. This "blinds" standard Type AC or Type A RCDs in your fuse box, preventing them from tripping during a regular shock. Ensure your kit specifies '6mA DC protection' to be UK-legal.
MCS Certification: Do You Need It?
MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is usually required for rooftop solar. For plug-in solar:
- Hardware: The panel and inverter should be MCS-listed (or CE/UKCA) for quality assurance.
- Installation: You do NOT need an MCS installer for a plug-in kit, but you then forfeit Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments.

Generally, balcony solar falls under Permitted Development in England and Wales. However, exceptions exist:
Conservation Areas
If you live in a Grade II listed building or a conservation area, you must check with your local council first.
Shared Freehold
Review your leasehold or management agreement. Look for clauses regarding "external appearances" or "balcony alterations."
Prohibited: The "Death Plug"
NEVER build your own system using male-to-male power cables (often called "suicide cables"). Commercial plug-in solar kits use automatic relay disconnects that ensure the plug pins are only live when they detect the grid is present. If you unplug the kit, the pins become dead instantly.
